How do I start to workout when my fitness level is Zero?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’m not seriously overweight, only a little but I have zero endurance and a horrible Fitness level. I’m winded after walking short distances. How do I even begin to start working out when I get worn out so fast. I really want to be healthy but I feel like working out for 10 mins because I get seriously out of breath won’t cut it. I’ve also been to the doctor and he said I’m Healthy so its not medical.

Its really about getting used to it. I used to take a class that would wear me out before I finished it. Now, the class is so easy that I don’t take it anymore. It took about a month to get through it without feeling exhaused, and every time I went to class it got easier. Just take a class every day and do what you can. Tell the instructor that you are new (they usually ask who is new), and they give advice, just keep moving. All you can do is to stay with the class, don’t leave early and keep pushing yourself. I’ve been at my gym almost 3 yrs. There are girls that look the same now as they did then because they don’t try. My body has improved so much since I joined because I make good food choices, I stop eating when full, if I crave something I get a small version, and I work out daily. You can do this too. I am 5′5 and weigh 112 lbs, and I’m 42 yrs. old. Good luck.

7 Diet Tips to Lose Weight

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Keeping your diet under control is the most common method in losing weight. It is a common knowledge; however many people are not successful in losing weight because of certain practices that are actually not helping the person to reach their ideal weight.

Thus, to help a person in reaching his goals and achieve the weight that he likes, he may follow these 7 diet tips to lose weight and it won’t be long before he can have fun with a more desirable body.

The first of the seven diet tips to lose weight is to set a goal. A person should have a goal so that he will know if he is still in the right track in losing weight. With a given goal, you can monitor if all your efforts are actually having any effect. You can also benefit from this if you know that you need to achieve a certain weight and you should put the necessary efforts that you need to do before you can achieve that weight you long for. The goal should also be challenging but it should remain attainable so that an effect can still be achieved.

Secondly, you must know the right foods for you from those that may harm your body. The food that one eats should be monitored since they are the ones that can add to the actual body weight of the person.

Another tip would be to eat more fruits and vegetables. These foods are good for a person on a diet since it is high in fiber that helps a person’s metabolism. With a faster metabolism, a person can digest more foods and turn more of them into energy. Also, fats will be lessened if a person can use up all the foods into energy.

Fourth of the seven diet tips to lose weight is to keep yourself eating only small servings. This will keep you from over eating. Also, once you are already full, it is easier to stop eating since you do not have too much on your plate. Once your body grows accustomed with this type of Diet, you will no longer long for more foods since your body is already full.

A person should also avoid drinking liquids high in sugar. Water will still be the best way since it has no sugar and you can drink any amount and it will further help you lose weight since when you drink, you will feel less hungry. Thus, you will not crave for more food.

Also, a person on a diet should still make room for dessert during some occasions. This will help a person not to feel too much restricted. You can also give yourself a treat if you did something good like reaching the ideal weight. As long as you know how to control yourself from over eating and you follow the diet tips to lose weight, some treat can still be a healthy choice.

Lastly, all of these diet tips to lose weight would be useless if a person does not exercise. So the last tip would be to engage in a regular exercise. A diet with regular exercise can help a person reach his goals and achieve that weight desired. These are seven easy steps that can be done for a person who wants to lose weight.

Atkins Diet 101

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Who does not desire to have a fit and shaped up body? Perhaps we all do. Overweight is the biggest enemy of our health. But factors such as sedentary work, lack of time to exercise and the availability of delectable fast food have made it extremely difficult to have stabilized weight.

It is not only a person’s appearance that is badly affected by being overweight but also his Fitness. Usually obese people keep on confronting one or the other health problem. There are times when excess of weight becomes a mental torture and leads to depression.

It is quite an easy task to gain weight but immensely difficult to reduce it. Though there are various remedies prescribed to shed weight, all can’t to followed or trusted. One old and quite effective way to become light is the use of Atkin’s Diet.

Dr. Robert Atkins (1930-2003) was the father of Atkin’s Diet. In 1972 he popularized the Diet in his famous series of books. In practical application also the diet turned out to be quiet successful. Thus it became more and more popular with time.

Dr. Atkin believed that carbohydrate is the primary reason behind gaining weight. This is because carbohydrates are composed of energy providing items such as sugar, starch, cellulose and gums. So if a person reduces the intake of carbohydrates (carbs) he or she can greatly get rid of many pounds. Thus people should avoid potatoes and other starchy vegetables along with sugar, grains, pastas and fruits for these are the major sources of carbs. In the opinion of Dr. Atkins doing this will translate a carbohydrate-burning metabolism to a fat burning one. Atkin’s diet is critical of carbs related but not of fatty and protein rich stuff. In fact it recommends its users to eat food that provides them fats and proteins. In the case of proteins it particularly emphasizes the consumption of animal protein.

Though atkin’s diet has done wonders in many cases, it has many shortcomings. If this diet is quite popular with one set of people, some others are enormously critical of it. this is because of several reasons. Firstly Atkins meals are not only low in carbs but contain negligible amount of essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients. Secondly atkin’s diet is flourishing with cholesterol boosting fats that can be very troublesome. Thirdly since atkin’s diet promulgates animal protein, vegetarians find it difficult to adopt it. In the fourth place according to the American Heart Association (AHA), a high protein diet is not adequate to lose weight. So diets such as Atkin’s can cause nutritional deficiency and other cholesterol related problems (cardiac arrests) in the long run. Finally critics believe that eating meat and other high protein products can lead to osteoporosis, colon cancer, heart diseases and renal diseases.

However the best way to reduce weight is to avoid excess as well as complete elimination of anything. A person should take a diet rich in essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins, fibers etc.), stay away from fatty foods as much as possible. Also carbs such as sugar should be consumed in a regulated manner.

Disturbing Diet Revolution

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The highly respected Medical Letter calls it “unbalanced, unsound and unsafe.” The Council on Foods and Nutrition of the American Medical Association refers to it as a “bizarre regimen without any scientific merit.” The chair of the board of the New York County Medical Association describes it as “unethical and self-aggrandizing.”

If you’re wondering what these people are talking about, it’s “Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution” whose author, Dr. Robert C. Atkins, was the subject of congressional hearings by Senator George McGovern and his Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs.

Atkins was not a nutritionist but a cardiologist. He became interested in diets while working as a medical consultant for the American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T) in 1963. Concerned about his weight, he studied several medical journals and textbooks before coming up with his so-called “diet revolution” in 1964. His popular book followed eight years later.

The secret of staying slim, he claimed, is to eliminate carbohydrates from the diet and to eat a lot of fat. In his diet plan, he said you can eat as much as 5,000 calories daily, sit around all day, and still lose weight.

All this is possible because a high-fat and no carbohydrate Diet cause the body to release ketones, unburned chemicals that are the products of fat metabolism. Since there are no carbohydrates to burn as fuel, the body reacts by secreting a fat-mobilizing hormone (FMH) which, Atkins explained, burns fat.

By creating an induced state of ketosis (or elevated levels of ketones in the blood) similar to that found in diabetics and those who fast, Atkins said anyone can eat as much fat and protein as he wants without worrying about his weight. This is because ketones, which are made from body fat, are used instead of carbohydrates. These substances, he added, are also being sneaked out of the body in the urine and breath, making weight loss even faster.

Following this diet for a week will supposedly enable men to lose seven to eight pounds while women will lose five or six pounds. After this, you may gradually add carbohydrates to your diet until the body stops releasing ketones. This is your critical carbohydrate level which you should maintain to continue losing weight. That, in a nutshell, is Atkins’ diet revolution.

There are many reasons to be skeptical of Atkins’ claims. First, he claimed he treated about 10,000 patients with his diet but he never published any studies about this – hardly the kind of reaction you’d expect from a man with a revolutionary idea.

“A frequent criticism leveled at Dr. Atkins is that if, indeed, he discovered a new nutritional principle, the proper place to announce and explain it would have been in a medical journal or at a medical meeting. Dr. Atkins did neither,” revealed Theodore Berland in Consumer Guide’s “Rating the Diets.”

Atkins argued that it would be much too expensive to do that, considering the number of subjects. Ironically, he didn’t mind the thousands of dollars he poured in legal fees to defend his book and his theory. Second, no “diet revolution” appears to have taken place. The concepts Atkins espoused – that of a high fat and low carbohydrate diet – were popularized in Great Britain by a coffin-maker over a hundred years ago. Third, most of the weight loss caused by this diet is due to water not body fat.

The high intake of cholesterol and saturated fats which Atkins recommended can make one susceptible to heart disease and some forms of cancers, according to Kurt Butler and Dr. Lynne Rayner of the University of Hawaii in “The Best Medicine.” Furthermore, the state of ketosis which Atkins required for the dieter to maintain weight is dangerous. It can lead to coma and death. True enough, the revolutionary doctor developed a heart condition in 2000 and died three years later.

If you’re concerned about your weight, don’t fall for dangerous diets. Consult a reliable doctor for the right advice. To help you lose those extra pounds, taking a supplement like Zylorin may help. This powerful fat burner will enhance your diet and exercise program. Check out http://www.zylorin.com for details.

What is your vision of a fitness program?

Friday, November 20th, 2009

I am a coordinator for a university and was just given permission to start my own fitness program. It can be for anyone, students, community, staff. I wanted to know ideas of things people would want in a Fitness program. How can I make the best one possible. Any ideas or suggestions are much appreciated.

You’ve got a wide range of ages and types, not to mention whether you want both sexes in your group. What type of program do you want? Since you are the one leading it, where do you want this to go? How physical do you want it to be? What level of intensity do you see this program being? You may need to have two or three programs at different days. Do you want weights or resistance machines, cardio only or a mix of both? What’s your budget? What can you do? How big is your facility?

Check out local exercise programs already in the area, like the local Curves or Jazzercise places. Locate and talk to some independent gym owners. Get ideas and then do an impromptu survey to see what your clientele would like and how much time they have to do it per day. Then, get your results together and do that. You may not be successful right away but you will catch on and go from there.

Also, you may want to check out the U.S. Army and other military branches. Bases have very transient groups but have workout programs for enlisted personnel and their dependents. I understand that over the last few years they have become very user friendly and very duplicatable.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

What is a good fitness bar to eat after a workout?

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

My workout routine usually consists of running 1.5 miles and doing different types of weight training. I wanting to lose 10-12 pounds that I have put on after entering college, but this has been a very hard task for me thus far. So…I’m looking for a good fitness bar to eat after I workout to help me with my weight loss process. Thanks for any advice.

Askmen.com recommends Cliff bars. There are multiple varieties, including high-protein (although what you need most for recovery are carbs to restore muscle glycogen).

http://www.askmen.com/top_10/fitness_top_ten/34_Fitness_list.html

Askmen.com also rates chocolate milk as the #1 recovery food, if taken soon after the conclusion of the workout.

As for me, I stick to a homemade shake with water and soy milk, protein powder, fruit, raw cocoa, brewer’s yeast, and flax meal.
